Here’s an interesting analysis of declining car use, from the BBC: Have we fallen out of love with the car permanently?

OMFG WE ARE.NOT FALLING OUT OF LOVE WITH THE CAR. Enough with this meleaniall ‘oh they dont like cars’ bullcrap. Have you SEEN how expensive it is to.own a car? Forget the up front purchase cost, insurance and fuel bills and maintenance. Where can we park it if.your not.in tye states with a 3 acre mcdicks on every corner? Whats minimum wage now compared to back then? You could easily work a week or so a month and have more then enough money for a car. Not these days.
We love cars. We are being priced out of them.

Which is why there’s suddenly so many small, “affordable” entry-level motorcycles. I still think they’re too expensive (lol SR400 or TU250 prices), but they’re significantly cheaper than a car, that’s for sure.

And then you have parents bitching about safety, and you need the gear, which is another 6-900 $ on top.
You know im a huge advocate of bikes. Ita not for everyone

I should get a shirt that says “Ask me about reasonable motorcycling.”
It’s not for everyone, but I think it’s for more people than who currently do it.
Then again, read the comments on any article around here that even remotely mentions motorcycles and you find that a lot of people are OK with murdering motorcyclists, soooo...Iunno.

Did they plot any of that against telecommuting popularity?

Yep cars are expensive as ever because of stagnant wages, high student debt, higher costs of living, higher insurance rates compared to 20 years ago the list goes on and on.

I know you said forget purchase price but that is something that really grinds my gears. Since the mid 90's car prices have risen almost 20% over the rate of inflation, while wages have barley increased.

So so very true, especially in Britian. I got my licence ages ago but still no car purely because I refuse to pay £2000+ a year on insurance. That said I did find a car for £1,200 but of course it’s for a car I really don’t like. Oh the plight of being a young British car enthusiast.

Goddam this take is hot. I agree we’re not falling out of love with the car but a lot of tasks you used to have to do in person has been replced with technology. I can bank and shop in my underwear at 11 am.

Well put. I still love cars, but I’ve been bitten by the motorcycle bug hard. Already have a track day planned for the spring!

I love cars. I write about cars. I miss driving my car, looking at it, talking to it, taking it to shows.
But I don’t miss owning a car. I have designed my entire life around not needing to own a car.
(Some people might consider this cheating, as I now live with my fiancé and sometimes drive his car. But for six of the last seven years, I did not own a car and did not need one. I even took my cats to the vet in taxis.)
It’s just too expensive, and based on my experiences, the pleasure-to-pain ratio is not worth it.

It wasn’t mentioned, but in my opinion telecommuting is really not as big as we think it might be. It’s also often only part time.
